I believe that I have always been inclined and satisfied by the Spanish language and culture . As a Mexican-American I have been between two distinct worldviews and ideologies however, I feel that I have always had a stronger connection to my Latin origins. I have always been more passionate about learning and reading in Spanish than in English because growing up I was exposed continuously to the Latinx culture. Growing up in the United States my parents had a single rule for me and my siblings, which was to only speak Spanish at home and leave English for school and life outside of home. At the time I believed that my parents implementation was pointless, but now as a student working toward a degree in Spanish I am thankful. I am thankful that they took the time to impose on me the values of practicing, mastering, and appreciating two languages because being bilingual has had a significant impact on my life.
Growing up between two worlds was not always easy because I constantly felt out of place in both of my cultures. Often I felt confused about my identity and hoped to belong somewhere. When I started my college experience I took various courses that helped me understand much more about my culture and the impact that my community has had on the United States. The courses have also helped me reflect on my ideologies and shape new ideas of empowerment. Throughout my years at CSUMB I have had the privilege of taking courses with multiple exceptional professor that have helped me reach a proud sense of identity and belonging within both of my worlds. Many professors at CSUMB have contributed to my success, but I have been most influence and guided by the professors in the World Languages and Cultures department such as Dr. Donaldo Urioste who has mentored me since my freshman year on campus.
Currently, I am a few days away from concluding my Spanish career and degree and although it is a bittersweet experience I am excited that I am leaving such a different person than how I began. My love for my culture and Spanish language has only increased through my courses and education at this campus. There is no doubt that I want to continue learning and mastering my knowledge of Spanish language and literature Although I have accomplished many things I never thought I could or would be possible I have many future goals to look forward to.
