MLO 2: Language and Linguistics Knowledge
The student develops an understanding of the structure of the Spanish language and is able to use an appropriate level of formality according to the situation, whether in writing or in speech. The student completes between two and six courses (depending on his or her choice of emphasis, as either language and linguistics knowledge or literary and cultural knowledge) related to the Spanish language and linguistics. These courses deal with: the sound system of Spanish, the history of Spanish, advanced grammar, SpanishEnglish translation, a general introduction to Spanish linguistics, Spanish for professional application (medical, legal, etc. spheres), composition and conversation.
To fulfill major learning outcome two: Language and Linguistics knowledge I have taken class Spanish 313, Introduction to Spanish Linguistics as well as Spanish 312B, Spanish Reading 7 Writing. As a Spanish major with an emphasis in Literature and Culture these have been the two courses I have completed in order to satisfy MLO 2. These courses, I have learned about Spanish syntax, phonology, and phonetics with the goal of improving our composition and conversational skills. Most importantly we learned about the varieties that are found in the Spanish dialect and to do so it was necessary to analyze the history of these dialects. This allowed us to compare in terms of morphology, phonetics, phonology, and sentence structure the influence that exists between past dialects and modern Spanish. The courses also focused on enforcing the correct use of accents and sentence structuring. The required course reading materials provided information on advanced grammar and linguistics.
