Course Description: Exposes students to Mexican literature from its indigenous and Hispanic origins to its more contemporary expressions. Examines and discusses representative authors from all literary periods, including such literary icons as Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera, Mariano Azuela, Ignacio Altamairano, Rosario Castellanos, Ruan Rulfo, Octavio Paz Carlos Fuentes, José Agustin, and Laura Esquivel. La literature Mexicana (Mexican Literature) with Dr. Donaldo Urioste was my first intensive literature course taught in Spanish. Although I had previously been exposed to Mexican literature, I learned to analyze the Mexican elements in various novels. The novels covered in this course included Los de Abajo (1915) by Mariano Azuela, El Zarco (1901) by Ignacio Manuel Altamirano, Pedro Paramo (1955) by Juan Rulfo, Aura (1962) by Carlos Fuentes, La Tumba (1964) Jose Agustin, Como Agua para Chocolate (1992) by Laura Esquivel, and El Periquillo Sarniento (1830) by Jose Joaquin Fernandez de Lizarde. I enjoyed all the novels that were covered, however I gained a special admiration for the complexity and talent that Juan Rulfo presented in Pedro Paramo. I have also been able to incorporate in other courses the ideas I learned through this course. My literary knowledge increased significantly through in-class discussions and I benefited from hearing my classmate’s different analysis and interpretations of the novels . Finally, this course has exposed me to other Mexican writers and has encouraged me to read more of this genre.
