Course Description: Intro to Spanish Linguistics: Presents the principal branches of linguistic study, as it pertains to Spanish: the sound system (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), and the structure of sentences (syntax). Additionally, attention is paid to bilingualism, especially Spanish in the US, and how Spanish is spoken/written differently by various social groups (sociolinguistics) and in various Spanish-speaking countries (dialectology)
Introduction to Spanish Linguistics taught by Dr. Pablo Oliva covered units from the textbook, Introducción a la Lingüística Española. Through in class lectures and class activities we discussed and learned about Spanish Linguistics including morphology, phonetics, and syntax. We also learned about the varieties in speech and the linguistics that are found in different dialects. The benefits of bilingualism were also discussed in class. We were required to complete three “Trabajos Practicos,” which were extensive analyzing upon a specific unit/ topic. Daily homework was assigned with the purpose of gaining more practice and knowledge on the subjects for preparation for each unit exam. Through this class I gained knew knowledge on the origin of the Spanish language and the varieties that are found in Spanish. This class also helped me with my other classes by helping me build better sentence structures and composing better papers. My final projected consisted of a presentation in which me and my partner analyzed and researched the varieties in the Castellano dialect.
