Course description: The course focuses on reading and analyzing works from Latin American women writers. Examines fiction by and about women from varied socio-cultural backgrounds to discover the diversity and the commonality of female experience in different geographical regions. Students examine the narrative strategies employed by these writers in interpreting social, political, cultural, and religious forces that create gender, class, and ethnic barriers in Latin American society.
Latin American Women Writers with Dr. Maria Zielina included intensive reading and analyzing on a novel. Throughout the course we discussed novels such as, La Amortajada, El Arbol, Maldito Amor, Arrancame la Vida, Hasta no Verte Jesus Mio, y Encancaranublado. We were required to present on various novels that were disscussed and share with the class a specific topic by providing examples from the novels. In addition, to the class presentations an analytical essay was required after reading and analyazing each novel. The essays were helpful in expanding my Spanish vocabulary and gaining writing skills. Dr. Maria Zielina made learning about Latin American women writers intriguing with her dynamic lectures that included history, culture, and abstract information on the authors of our novels and the historical period in which they were written. We also discussed the impact that these women writers had on their society through their literary work.
